Popular projects
In Prittlewell, Southchurch and Eastwood, the most common job we're asked about is a single-storey rear extension to a 1930s semi, usually to create a kitchen-diner that opens onto the garden. Many of these homes also have garages that can become a bedroom, office or utility room.
Closer to the town centre, Victorian terraces need repointing, front wall rebuilds and careful renovation. Thorpe Bay's larger homes tend to bring bigger projects such as double-storey extensions and full renovations. We also work with landlords to renovate flats and houses between tenancies.
Practical details
A skip or scaffold on the road or pavement needs a licence from Southend City Council, and some streets near the seafront and town centre have parking restrictions. We arrange the licences and plan deliveries so they cause as little disruption as possible to you and your neighbours.
Coastal homes
Homes along the seafront in Thorpe Bay, Southchurch and Shoeburyness take the brunt of wind-driven rain and salt air, which wears mortar, render and exposed timber faster than further inland. When we repoint, rebuild walls or replace timber here, we choose materials and details that stand up to the exposure, and we pay close attention to flashings, sills and drips that keep water out.
Local homes
Southend's homes range widely. Around the town centre and Clifftown you'll find Victorian terraces and villas with solid brick walls and lime mortar. Prittlewell, Southchurch and Eastwood have many 1930s semis and bungalows that suit rear extensions and garage conversions, while Thorpe Bay has larger detached homes on bigger plots.
Planning across the city is handled by Southend City Council. Several parts of Southend are conservation areas, where permitted development rights are tighter and changes to the front of a house usually need permission. We check your address before you commit to a design.
